What are the Benefits of AHA, BHA and PHA?

Today there are so many products that include those three abbreviation letters on their packaging. While some of them contain all three, others may consist of just one or two.

But not many of us know what those letters mean and that those are essential ingredients for healthier skin. Why don’t we have a closer look?

AHA, BHA and PHA are abbreviations for particular kinds of acids, where each one brings specific benefits to our skin. AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid; BHA is a Beta Hydroxy Acid; PHA is a Poly Hydroxy Acid.

All three acids are powerful chemical exfoliants that are working toward to clean your skin deeply. They are key to flawless skin with minimum irritation or acne.

AHA, BHA, PHA Benefits

Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)

This acid works best to exfoliate your skin and remove all dead skin cells, unclog pores, and smoothen the surface. It is especially helpful for oily and acne-prone skin. You can find Alpha Hydroxy Acid in fruits, nuts, milk, or sugar.

The most common AHAs used today are Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid. Glycolic acid is excellent for controlling sebum production, while Lactic Acid works antimicrobial and hydrating substance. Commonly, AHA is also used in skin care to brighten dark spots and smooth skin surface through exfoliation.

Some skin care producers use other AHAs derived from various sources. If you are concerned about whether or not Alpha Hydroxy Acids are vegan-friendly or not, look for Hydroxy Caprylic Acid. This acid may be animal based.

AHA is also great as a skin moisturiser, due to its hydrophilic properties. This means that AHA molecules attract and hold water better than any other acids. Therefore, skin care containing AHA will work great for dry skin as well.

For those who are interested in exfoliating their skin and reducing acne appearance, we recommend trying Cosrx AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner.

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA)

Beta Hydroxy Acid is a chemical exfoliator too. BHA does not only remove dead skin cells and impurities from the surface but goes into more skin layers for deeper cleaning. By doing so, it is reducing excessive oil and sebum. Moreover, by reducing sebum, it unclogs pores and prevents the formation of acne.

One of the most commonly used BHA today is a Salicylic Acid. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which means it calms the skin, reduces redness, and irritations.

Just like AHA, Beta Hydroxy Acid is antibacterial and play an essential role in reducing acne and other skin impurities. Skincare brands usually add Salicylic Acid in their products targeting acne.

There are so many beauty products today that contain both AHA and BHA simply because a combination works better for your skin. AHA and BHA are pretty similar to each other in functions but target different skin layers. For example, AHA is more commonly used in anti-aging products, while BHA is directed to fight acne. By using both, you can achieve more exceptional results for your skin.

If you are interested in reducing blackheads and acne, we recommend you to have a look at Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid. It is an excellent solution for minimising skin impurities and achieving a healthier glow. Give it a try.

Poly Hydroxy Acid (PHA)

Poly Hydroxy Acid is a new ingredient introduced to our skincare routine last year. It is an excellent option for those who have sensitive skin. PHA is similar to Alpha Hydroxy Acid in breaking down old cell connections and exfoliating dead cells them.

However, there are also some differences. Compare to Alpha Hydroxy Acid,  PHA has a larger molecule size, which makes it less irritating to the skin. If your skin cannot tolerate the AHAs, then you may want to try skin care containing PHA.

The most common PHAs in our beauty products today are Lactobionic Acid, Galactose, and Gluconic Acid.

Poly Hydroxy Acid in your skin care will improve and smooth the skin texture, as well as improve skin tone. All this is due to gentle exfoliating properties this ingredient possess.

We recommend you to check Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner. It works just great for sensitive skin, even while containing AHA.
